Adopt a Dove in Canada

Gentle, quiet cooers that suit calm homes and apartments.

Pet doves — usually ringneck (Barbary) doves or the smaller diamond dove — are among the gentlest birds you can share a home with. They coo softly instead of screeching, seldom bite, and many become calm and easy to handle with patience. Doves aren't climbers like parrots: they walk, flutter and need a wide cage or a safe room to stretch their wings. A dove raised in captivity cannot survive if it is released outdoors, which is why careful rehoming matters so much for these birds.

Dove adoption FAQs

Are doves loud?

No. Doves coo — a soft, repetitive sound most neighbours never notice — which makes them a good fit for apartments and condos.

Should I adopt one dove or two?

Doves are social and usually happier with a companion, but a single dove that spends time with its people every day can do well. If you'd rather not deal with eggs, ask the owner about the birds' sexes before you adopt.

Can a pet dove be released outside?

No. A domestic dove doesn't know how to find food or avoid predators, and a released dove rarely survives long. If you can no longer keep a dove, rehome it — never set it free.

How do I adopt a dove through Bird Sitting Toronto?

Browse the available doves above and apply directly on the bird's page — you'll fill in a short application and chat with our AI screening assistant. The bird's owner (or BST, for birds in our care) reads the applications, chooses the new home and contacts you directly. If none are listed today, the waitlist gets first notice when one arrives.

Need to rehome your dove?

Listing is free, every applicant is screened before you see them, and reading their full applications — contact details, complete answers and the AI interview — is free too.
