Adopt a Canary in Canada

A cheerful songbird for people who love to listen more than handle.

Canaries are small songbirds, not parrots — and that difference matters. A male canary's song can fill a home, yet most canaries would rather be admired than handled, so they suit people who enjoy a bird's company without needing a cuddle. They do best in a long cage with room to fly from perch to perch, a quality seed or pellet diet with fresh greens, and a steady daily routine away from drafts. Many are rehomed simply because a family's schedule changed, and they usually settle quickly in a calm home.

Canary adoption FAQs

Does a canary need a companion?

Not necessarily. Canaries are happy as single birds, and a lone male often sings the most. If you keep more than one, give them plenty of room — two males in one cage can squabble.

Can I hold a canary?

Canaries generally don't enjoy being handled, and most never become hand-tame the way a budgie or cockatiel can. Think of a canary as a bird to watch and listen to; a calm, predictable routine is what it needs from you.

Do female canaries sing?

Not much. The full, rolling song comes almost entirely from males; females chirp and call. If song is the main reason you're adopting, ask the owner whether the bird is a singing male.

How do I adopt a canary through Bird Sitting Toronto?

Browse the available canaries above and apply directly on the bird's page — you'll fill in a short application and chat with our AI screening assistant. The bird's owner (or BST, for birds in our care) reads the applications, chooses the new home and contacts you directly. If none are listed today, the waitlist gets first notice when one arrives.
