Budgies: Small Birds, Big Personalities

Budgerigars (budgies) are one of the most popular pet birds in the world — and for good reason. They are social, intelligent, and endlessly entertaining. But their small size does not mean they need less care.

Diet

A healthy budgie diet includes high-quality seed mix or pellets, fresh leafy greens like romaine lettuce and kale, and small amounts of fruit like apple or berries. Avoid avocado, chocolate, and caffeine, which are toxic to all birds.

Housing

Budgies need a cage at least 18 x 18 x 24 inches for a single bird. Wider cages are better than tall ones, since budgies fly horizontally. Include multiple perches of varying diameter to promote foot health.

Socialization

Budgies are flock birds and thrive on companionship. If you cannot provide a same-species companion, plan to spend at least two hours a day interacting with your budgie. They can learn words and phrases with patient, repeated training.

Health

Watch for signs of illness: fluffed feathers, sitting on the cage floor, nasal discharge, or changes in droppings. Annual vet checkups with an avian specialist are recommended.

Lifespan

With proper care, budgies can live 8–15 years, so adopting one is a meaningful commitment.
